La proposta per il Parco tra i Mari si connota come il tassello mancante della matrice del tessuto della città Milazzo, che attraverso la sua filigrana opera una ricucitura di trame e flussi di questa frangia urbana. Questo nuovo brano paesaggistico si caratterizza come un collettore di tensioni urbane che, assorbite nel parco, vengono modulate per innescare nuove modalità di fruizione del paesaggio e della città. Il principio fondativo si determina grazie alla declinazione di un sistema naturale che si configura come un buffer verso l’area urbana più edificata e come campo di relazioni verso il paesaggio rurale e i limitrofi resti di archeologia industriale.
The design proposal is based on an urban principle that takes the existing layout as a formal framework upon which to structure the design. The defining feature of the park is the continuation of the axis of Via XX Luglio, which crosses the area diagonally, acting as an organising route and threshold between the tree-lined space – which also acts as a filter towards the established fabric on the seafront – and the area where the park’s activities and elements interact.
A filigree pattern that echoes the alignment of the buildings defines a network of secondary paths connecting the edges, allowing for multiple crossings and articulating thematic areas.
The diagonal axis defines the park’s two distinct spatial areas.
On one side, the tree-lined area takes the form of a succession of hypostyle halls, set against a backdrop of clearings that serve as focal points and landmarks within the woodland: a small circular portico and an arena. The other half of the park, on the other hand, is characterised by a sequence of vegetated areas alternating between flower-filled meadows and shrubbery, set against rows of trees punctuated by a syncopated rhythm. This more open space lends itself to serving as a setting for the industrial heritage remains that define its edge. In this section, the denser geometric pattern creates an alternation of stabilised earth strips and vegetation that accompanies the park all the way to the site of the former station.
The diagonal axis that defines the development culminates physically in a paved square that serves as the park’s focal point. A wider transverse axis highlights the two hubs for services and intermodal transport, each with its own distinct character. The services building closest to the urban fabric takes the form of a new landmark in its own right, as if seeking and encapsulating a final comparative and figurative dialogue with the city on one side, and with the chimneys and silos of the nearby refinery on the other. The intermodal transport hub, which faces the point where the city gives way to the rural landscape, is formed by a fold in the ground that houses the various mobility-related activities within its core.
